Ball joints are a component of the front suspension of a car. The front suspension is a complex assembly of links, joints, bushings and bearings that allow your front wheels to move up and down independently and turn left or right together. Ball joints allow suspension movement which maximizes the tire’s contact with the road providing optimum vehicle control and tire wear.
Types of Ball Joint
Upper Ball Joints
Designed to maintain alignment and absorb radial loads, such as turning forces, upper ball joints enable proper rotation of steering knuckle. Upper ball joints use a follower design.
Lower Ball Joints
Acting as a pivot point for the steering system, lower ball joints can either be load-carrying or follower types depending on the suspension design. Lower ball joints use a variety of designs: compression loaded, tension loaded and follower.

Structure of Ball Joint
The ball joint structure consists of two main components: the ball and the socket. The ball is ordinarily a spherical shape for attaching to one part, while the socket is a hollow sphere that is attached to the other part. For this reason, they are designed to withstand heavy loads and high stresses, making them ideal for use in demanding environments. However, as with any mechanical component, they can wear out over time and may need to be replaced.

Replacement Precautions for Ball Joint
As a rule, replacement ball joints will often be the same type (greaseable or low friction) as the original. For some applications (such as trucks), you may want to upgrade to a stronger or greasable aftermarket ball joint if the original equipment ball joint failed at low mileage.
If a broken ball joint is being replaced, the tapered hole in the steering knuckle should also be inspected for damage (a worn taper can cause a repeat failure).
On suspensions that use a pinch bolt to lock the ball joint stud in the knuckle, a new bolt should be used if the ball joint is replaced.
Some ball joints are difficult to replace because they are pressed into the control arm. This will require taking the control arm to a parts store or shop that has a hydraulic press for disassembly and reassembly.
Some ball joints are attached to the control arm with rivets. These must be chiseled or drilled out to replace the ball joint.
IF the ball joint is permanently attached to the arm, the whole control arm assembly must be replaced if the joint has worn out.
