Advantages of Control Arm
Handling
Without control arms, the wheels of the car would move independently of the body, making steering and handling much more difficult. Control arms help to keep the wheels in line with the body, allowing for more precise steering and better handling overall. Whether you're taking your car through tight turns on a winding road or navigating around obstacles in the city, control arms make the experience smoother and more responsive.
Stability
When the wheels of the car are properly aligned with the body, the vehicle is more stable overall. This means that it is less likely to roll over in the event of an accident and less likely to skid or slide off the road in dangerous conditions. This can be especially important for larger vehicles like SUVs and trucks, which have a higher center of gravity and are therefore more prone to tipping over.
Reducing noise
They absorb and dampen some of the vibration that comes from the road, ensuring a smoother and quieter ride for passengers. This can be particularly beneficial for long drives or for anyone who spends a lot of time in their vehicle.
Save Cost
In addition to these benefits, control arms can also help to prolong the life of other suspension components. By keeping the wheels in line with the body, they reduce the amount of stress and wear on other parts such as ball joints and tie rod ends. This can ultimately save car owners money on repairs and maintenance.

Material of Control Arm
Stamped Steel
Stamped steel has been a common material for control arms. Steel offers the advantages of strength, low cost, and flexing under weight. The disadvantages of steel control arms include rusting. When used in wet conditions, they may not last for long. Steel also produces heavy arms, which is not desirable if several have to be installed in a compact car.
Cast Iron
Cast iron is another common control arm material. Many modern control arms are made from it. The material offers the advantage of sturdiness and the ability to resist damage . As a result, these types of arms are popular in trucks and SUVs where there are large forces to overcome. Cast iron also withstands corrosion and wear, making it longlasting in different driving conditions.
Cast Aluminum
This material produces lightweight control arms that suit applications that require light parts. Cast aluminum can stand up to the stress that suspension components are usually subjected to. It also resists rust, making aluminum arms to last a long time. Aluminum has its disadvantages, though. It's a soft metal that wears easily. When used to make control arms, it can mean a shorter lifespan for the component. Cast aluminum also does not bend. Impacts are, therefore, likely to break or crack an aluminum control arm.
Design of Control Arm
Control arm design changes as fast as automotive design and manufacturing technology does. Long ago, "double wishbone" suspension was the norm on the front of most cars. As you can imagine based on the name alone, the upper and lower control arms looked like wishbones. They were also called "A-Frames" or "A-Arms" depending on who you talked to (wishbones look like the letter "A" by the way, if you aren't familiar with poultry). This design is still common on many modern vehicles because it just plain works.
Lower Control Arms
When a vehicle has a MacPherson strut style front or rear suspension, lower control arms are the only type used. An upper control arm isn't needed because the strut takes its place. This also means one less ball joint, and a couple less rubber control arm bushings to worry about.
Upper Control Arms and Trailing Arms
For the rear of a vehicle with a solid axle, any style of control arms might be used to connect the rear axle to the frame or unibody. Most often, it is three or four control arms with rubber bushings on each end. These control arms are called "trailing arms" or "rear trailing arms". When a vehicle has independent rear suspension, it may have upper and lower A-Arms, trailing arms, or some other unique design that fits the shape of the vehicle.
Adjustable Control Arms
Adjustable control arms are used to adjust wheel camber. Camber is the vertical alignment of the wheels. Negative camber means that the top of the wheel is tipped inward toward the center of the vehicle. Positive camber means that top of the wheel is tipped outward, away from the center of the vehicle. Adjusting camber is a huge factor when it comes to racing, stance, and the lowering or lifting a vehicle.
We test our parts to the extreme, from every angle. All our control arms undergo rigorous dimensional, material, durability and performance tests, designed to replicate the very same stresses the part will experience on the road. For example, every part is tested on our three axis test rig so all three forces can be analyzed simultaneously; braking force, cornering force and suspension travel movement. And up to 250,000 cycles.
We also test their resilience to extreme environmental conditions and corrosive materials. Our purpose-built environmental chamber tests to temperatures as low -40°F and up to 248°F. And our control arms are exposed to 720 hours of salt spray, to evaluate the effect of salt on bushings adhesion. So, you can choose a Delphi control arm with confidence, knowing they'll perform, even under the harshest conditions.
